Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a powerful, scientifically proven method to overcome difficult thoughts and emotions through mindfulness. Instead of fighting our thoughts or emotions (always a losing battle), we can simply practice acceptance without judgment. When we can accept our emotions as a normal part of the human experience and an opportunity to grow, they naturally begin to have less power over us.

As a balance to acceptance, ACT also calls for action: a commitment to changes that are based on your core values. This is one of the reasons I believe that defining your core values is the first step to starting growth coaching, and it’s the reason why I created The TrueYou: Self-Discovery Course. If you make decisions and goals that are in alignment with your core values, your life will naturally fall into alignment with the person you really are—and the person you want to be.

The research behind ACT speaks for itself. A large number of studies have shown that ACT helps people to achieve their goals and become happier. Research has also shown ACT to be effective for treating anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and addiction. ACT has proven to be successful in achieving and maintaining weight loss and effective in controlling cravings like junk food or cigarettes.

The best thing about ACT is that it is thought to be effective after just a handful of sessions, not the years of visits that some psychology methods require. Research has shown you can also benefit from working with an ACT practitioner online. In fact, most of my sessions are held virtually online rather than face-to-face, and I find that for most women, this works exceptionally well. They are able to save themselves the commute time or paying for childcare, and it’s more convenient and comfortable to have their sessions at home. It’s wonderful to be able to choose a coach based on whom you feel is the right fit, rather than being limited by location.

I’ve experienced the power of ACT firsthand in my own life. If you’ve read my story, you know by now that I have experienced the effects of a mood disorder, cyclothymia. While it used to control me, I now enjoy a rewarding life. ACT is one of the many things that helped me make that shift. It has not only helped me find healing from my mood disorder, but it also helped me to find the meaning in it and embrace it.

My clients have had equally life-changing results, particularly those who have struggled with anxiety. While some of them had already tried to overcome anxiety through other techniques, they reported that ACT was the only one that really made a significant difference in reducing their anxiety over the long-term.
