What would your life look like if you had 10% more confidence?
How about this thought. Does this ring true to you? I can’t achieve my goals, perform at my peak, do the things I want to do, or behave like the person I want to be, until I feel more confident? You are not alone! Lack of self-confidence is one of the main culprits holding women back from living the lives they truly want. Especially in the workplace, where the gender confidence gap, stops women from applying for jobs unless they feel 100% qualify, whereas men apply when they feel only 60% qualified. Women also don’t negotiate as often as men do, and when they do, they ask for much less money in comparison to men. Mounting evidence shows, that is in fact women’s lack of self-confidence that is linked to their in-action. So they are falling behind, because they stop themselves from acting and therefore even trying in the first place! Woman are taking themselves out of the race before it even starts! Gaining confidence is not about going from zero to hero overnight, instead it is about taking baby steps and working daily outside of your comfort zone. Importantly, you also need to be mindful about what your values are and intentionally use your strengths. Acknowledge the negative thoughts, feelings and “I’m not good enough” stories that may arise, and practice at every moment to direct your action towards the outcome that you want, despite experiencing these negative thoughts and feelings. In the book The Confidence Gap, by Dr Russ Harris, this is his number one rule with regards to confidence: that you need to act confidently first, even if you don’t feel confident yet. The feelings of confidence only follow later, through commitment, perseverance and practice. So you need to “fake it until you feel it”.
